MAN OF THE FOREST
Latin Jazz from IVO PERELMAN
Available on:
Among the several artistic/musical priorities upon which this CD is premised,
perhaps
the most important is that all the pieces are based on thematic or motivic ideas
by the
great Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959). To Ivo Perelman this
did not
mean playing Villa-Lobos' music straight, nor did it mean recreating, i.e.
re-composing
his music in jazz terms, let alone what years ago used to be called 'jazzing up
the
classics' (in this case some of Villa-lobos' 'tunes'); nor did it mean mixing jazz
improvisations with some of Villa-Lobos' intact compositions or subjecting them to
variational procedures. Rather, Ivo wanted to pay tribute to his fellow
countryman by
using a few particularly fetching melodic morsels, culled from the vast catalogue
of
Villa-Lobos' works, as points of departure, transuting these fragments into Ivo's
own
unique personal sound world. The Villa-Lobos pieces involded are: Pai-do-Mato
(Man of the Forest), subtitled Amerindian Poem; Cantiga Caico
(Song of
Caico); Veleiro (Sailboat); Rasga o Coracao (Touch the Heart); and
Prelude No. 1 (for guitar).
