Originally, The Art of Jazz Trumpet was to be a single volume that was compact and concise,
yet all-encompassing. It was to include a jazz trumpet history, various how-to sections and a bunch of written exercises. It occurred to me at some point that people might read the written stuff once or twice but would refer to the musical exercises repeatedly. Therefore, what was needed was an exercise book that could stand alone. As a result Volume II contains mostly written exercises with a bare-bones explanatory text; Volume I features more detailed analysis with just a few written exercises.
When faced with the seemingly enormous, never-ending task of acquiring skill and internalizing a universe of harmony, aspiring jazz musicians have a hard time knowing what to practice or where to begin. The job at hand can seem so daunting that any practice at all appears inadequate. I hope that this book of exercises helps focus your practicing. No book can make you an artist, but this one can definitely raise your skill level several notches.
